Overview

The degree to which stress unduly influences our lives is generally underestimated. Often the mind clings onto anger, guilt, regrets about the past, or anxiety about the future. This oscillation of the mind is the determining factor for tension and stress, both for ourselves and for the people around us.

The Art of Living courses incorporate simple yet powerful techniques, including breathing exercises and meditation, to help relieve people of physical and emotional stress and improve clarity of thought. Our programmes seek to blossom an individual's full potential with emphasis on conscious holistic living and personal self-development.

One of the main breathing techniques used on Art of Living courses is the Sudarshan Kriya®, a powerful breathing practice which is traditionally understood to have a profound effect on the mind, body and spirit.

The courses have been extremely effective at dealing with:

  • Eliminating everyday stresses
  • Increasing overall health and mental well-being
  • Increased mental clarity and greater joy and peace in life.
  • Improving relationships and bringing sustained emotional balance

The Art of Living breathing practices are derived from the Yogic Science of Breath and initial scientific studies confirm the traditionally held benefits.

Sudarshan Kriya

One of the most comprehensive breathing techniques derived from the Yogic Science of Breath and taught by the Art of Living Foundation is Sudarshan Kriya® which is traditionally understood to use specific rhythms of the breath to eliminate stress, support the various organs and systems within the body, transform overpowering emotions and restore peace of mind.

Su means proper, darshan means vision and kriya means purifying practice and the Sudarshan Kriya is exactly that - a purifying practice.

Independent research has shown that Sudarshan Kriya and its accompanying practices may significantly:

  • Reduce levels of stress (reduce cortisol - the "stress" hormone)
  • Benefit the immune system
  • Reduce cholesterol
  • Relieve anxiety and depression (mild, moderate and severe)
  • Increase antioxidant protection
  • Enhance brain function (increased mental focus, calmness and recovery from stressful stimuli)
  • Enhance health, well-being and peace of mind

When the mind settles down it lets go of all tension and stress, and centres itself into the present moment.
